In a world with no clicks
February 26, 2008 | Posted by: Neil
Habits are hard to overcome. Especially habits that are connected to motor activity and hand-eye coordination. Back in 2005, The Institute for Interactive Research put together this website dedicated to proving how reliant we are on clicks while surfing the web. While the site may be three or so years old, the exercise remains as relevant as ever. Try it out, see how you do.

I’ll admit that it was hard to not click. And when the survey came up, I clicked. Got me!
This sort of interface is highly dependent on super quick interaction with what the mouse if moving over. I think my slow computer was the culprit, but there were a couple times I felt it wasn’t getting my mouseover, but then the interface would respond a split second later.
The question remains, what’s so bad about the click? I love the click! It’s proof that I made a purposeful action in response to the interface, while a mouseover could be inadvertent. Plus, having both mousever and click respond differently allows the UI designer to give progressively more information for each action, respectively.
Still, this is a great experiment. An instant classic back in 2005, IMO.
