Strike up the brand…
May 9, 2006 | Posted by: Lee
Think about some of the brand names that now represent the entire category of goods. What brand equity! Do you find yourself using the brand name instead of the descriptive name?
For example:
- Kleenex for tissue
- Coke for soda
- Reynolds Wrap for aluminum foil
- Saran Wrap for plastic wrap
- Google it for search
What are some others?

Levis for jeans.
The interesting thing (and good thing, for Google) is that the “Google it” is not just a generic phrase. People really mean, “Go to Google” when they say that. That’s because it is so good.
This is something that can sometimes be lost in discussions of branding. Branding is important, to be sure, but the quality of the product is paramount. And the reason why all of these product names became generic terms is because they are best in their category. (Well, except for coke. Nothing beats Dr. Pepper!)
