If the idea is to take the visitor through the shortest path to action then this campaign by Tailgate is the pinnacle of perfection. In-banner shopping, what a great application. Visitors don't even have to go to the sellers website, they can shop right where the ad is.If you want a real life example of the results iMediaConnection has a nice showcase article on the campaign.

Snocap offers this for bands on Myspace. (See an example.) You can buy albums or songs right from a widget on the band’s Myspace page without ever leaving.
To me, it’s all about thinking about what the customer would want. What would make the surfer’s life easier…
I’m on a band’s Myspace page, and I hear their music. I think, “yeah, I’d like to own some of this.” I then buy some music right there and continue hanging out on Myspace doing whatever I was doing. Don’t drag me off to some other site.
And if you’re thinking about this from the band’s point of view, don’t put any more barriers between the fan and the purchase.
It’s a win-win.
